I have eight years of experience as an instructor across a range of undergraduate economics courses, from Principles of Microeconomics and Labor Economics to the History of Economic Thought. My teaching emphasizes mastery-based assessment, incentives to revisit material, and bringing the real world and my own research into the classroom. I believe students learn economics best by working through real problems with real data.
My research on labor markets, occupational safety, and fissured employment informs my teaching directly. Even in introductory courses, I use examples from the industries I study to ground abstract concepts. In more advanced courses, I share in-progress work to give students a window into how applied economics research actually gets done.
Online Teaching
Students can have complicated lives, with competing demands from school, work, and family. Online learning makes education accessible for busy students, and for those who may get less out of in-person classes due to disability or different learning styles. To help these students succeed, I design my online courses to be flexible, accessible, and clear. I have taught large courses (>200 students) in U.S. Economic History and Principles of Microeconomics, as well as smaller online courses (~40 students) in Labor Economics and Current Economic Problems. Below is one lecture from my U.S. Economic History course on the Dust Bowl:

Course Evaluation Excerpts
“While the course went extremely fast, the instructor did a fantastic job of teaching the concepts and also maintained a great balance in the over all course.”
-Mathematics for Economists
“Kevin did an excellent job of explaining hard economic concepts and translating what some of the thinkers were saying. He was always quick to respond to my emails and was always willing to stay on a certain topic as long as the class needed in order to understand it.”
-History of Economic Doctrines
“Appreciated how he handled going online with great ease and was still very attentive.”
-Current Economic Problems, 2020
“He did a fantastic job. The historical asides were hilarious and engaging, contextualizing some of the more obscure material.”
-Principles of Microeconomics
